Soundproofing a bedroom against traffic, a meeting room against the open office, and a drum studio against the apartment below are three completely different constructions. Each step up in performance — roughly every 10 dB — needs more mass, more decoupling or both, and the cost follows.

The factors that move the price
- Performance target — each additional 10 dB roughly doubles construction complexity

Where people waste money
The most common waste is treating the wrong problem: absorptive foam and panels bought to stop sound passing through a wall. Absorption improves the sound inside a room; it does not add meaningful isolation. The second is under-specifying the door — an expensive wall with a standard door performs like the door.
