The two questions every acoustic specification answers
Every acoustic problem is one of two things: the room sounds bad, or sound is travelling where it shouldn't. Absorption ratings such as NRC answer the first. Transmission-loss ratings such as STC answer the second. They are not interchangeable, and a product that scores well on one may do almost nothing for the other.
In UAE fit-out projects — hotels, clinics, offices, mosques, studios — consultants routinely receive submittals where a high-NRC absorptive panel is proposed to solve a noise-transfer complaint between rooms. It will not work, because absorption reduces reflected energy inside a space; it does not add mass or isolation to the partition.
NRC — Noise Reduction Coefficient
NRC is the arithmetic average of a material's sound absorption coefficients at 250, 500, 1000 and 2000 Hz, rounded to the nearest 0.05. It runs from 0.00 (fully reflective, like polished marble) to 1.00 and above (highly absorptive).
A 9 mm PET acoustic wall panel bonded directly to a wall typically achieves NRC 0.35–0.50. Mount the same panel on a 25–50 mm air gap, or back it with mineral wool, and the low-frequency performance improves markedly, often pushing NRC past 0.75. Mounting condition matters as much as the material itself — always check whether the quoted figure is Type A (direct) or E-400 (with plenum) mounting.
- NRC 0.15–0.30 — mostly decorative; minimal acoustic benefit
- NRC 0.50–0.70 — useful for offices, classrooms and meeting rooms
- NRC 0.75–0.95 — specify for studios, cinemas, auditoria and call centres
STC — Sound Transmission Class
STC is a single-number rating derived from transmission loss measured in one-third octave bands from 125 Hz to 4000 Hz. Higher STC means less sound passes through the construction. It applies to whole assemblies — walls, floors, doors, glazing — not to loose materials.
Because STC is weighted towards speech frequencies, it under-represents low-frequency performance. For plant rooms, gyms, nightclubs and cinemas where bass energy dominates, ask for the full transmission-loss spectrum or an Rw + Ctr figure instead of relying on STC alone.

The weakest-link rule
An assembly performs at the level of its weakest element. An STC 55 wall with an unsealed STC 30 door behaves like roughly STC 33 in practice. On UAE projects the usual culprits are undersealed door perimeters, back-to-back electrical boxes, uncapped blockwork head joints and MEP penetrations left open above the ceiling.
Budget for the details: perimeter seals, drop-down thresholds, acoustic sealant at every junction, and isolated service penetrations. They cost a fraction of the wall build-up and determine whether the specified rating is ever achieved on site.
How to specify correctly
- Room sounds echoey, reverberant or fatiguing → specify NRC (absorption): wall panels, ceiling panels, baffles, clouds
- Sound passing between rooms or from outside → specify STC / Rw (isolation): mass, cavities, resilient decoupling, acoustic doors
- Footfall or gym impact noise through a slab → specify IIC and floating floors, not NRC
- Equipment noise outdoors → specify insertion loss and barrier or enclosure design, not NRC
Frequently asked questions
Can acoustic foam soundproof a room?
No. Acoustic foam is an absorber with a high NRC but almost no mass, so it barely changes sound transmission between rooms. To stop sound passing through a wall you need mass, an air cavity and decoupling — for example a double-stud partition, resilient clips or an STC-rated acoustic door.
What NRC should I specify for an office in Dubai?
For open-plan offices, target an average NRC of 0.70 or higher across the ceiling plane plus absorptive vertical elements such as baffles or screens. Meeting rooms and call areas usually need additional wall absorption at NRC 0.75+.
Is a higher STC always better?
Only up to the point where the weakest element governs. Increasing a wall from STC 55 to STC 60 delivers nothing if the door is STC 35 or if MEP penetrations are unsealed. Balance the assembly first, then raise the rating.
