Acoustic Panel Installation Guide: Wall and Ceiling Systems

Most underperforming acoustic installations are not product failures. They are mounting failures — no air gap, poor coverage or the wrong distribution across the room.

Before you fix anything: set the coverage

Decide the treated area from the reverberation target, not from aesthetics. As a working guide, offices and classrooms need absorptive treatment across roughly 40–60% of the ceiling plane plus some wall area; studios and cinemas often need 70% or more, distributed across all three axes.

Never treat only one pair of parallel surfaces. Leaving two hard parallel walls untreated preserves flutter echo even when the rest of the room is heavily absorptive.

Substrate preparation

  • Surfaces must be dry, flat within ±3 mm over 2 m, dust-free and fully cured — new plaster and screed in UAE conditions still hold moisture for weeks
  • Complete all MEP first-fix and mark out sprinkler heads, detectors, speakers and light positions before setting out panels
  • Set a datum line with a laser; slat and grooved panels expose any drift immediately
  • Acclimatise timber, MDF and veneer panels on site for 48 hours before installation

The air gap is free performance

A 25–50 mm cavity behind a panel improves absorption at low and mid frequencies because the panel sits nearer to a quarter-wavelength peak of particle velocity. Filling that cavity with 50 mm of 48 kg/m³ mineral wool improves it further. This single detail often adds 0.15–0.25 to the effective NRC at no material cost beyond the battens.

Common site mistakes to check for

  • Panels butted with no expansion allowance — UAE humidity and temperature swings cause timber panels to bow
  • Adhesive dots only at the corners, leaving edges lifting and rattling
  • Absorptive panels used to fix a sound-transfer complaint (specify isolation instead)
  • Sprinkler and detector cut-outs made after fixing, damaging the acoustic fleece behind perforations
  • Slat panels installed without the black acoustic fleece behind them — the visible gain is lost and the acoustic gain never arrives
  • Fire compliance: confirm Class A / Euroclass B-s1,d0 documentation before install, not after

Handover

Photograph the substrate, cavity and fleece before the panels close them off. Record product codes, batch numbers and mounting type in the O&M file — a future reverberation-time verification will need the mounting condition to be meaningful.

Frequently asked questions

How far apart should acoustic panels be spaced?

Spacing panels with gaps roughly equal to panel width across a wall gives close to the same absorption as a fully covered surface, because diffraction at the edges increases the effective absorbing area. Distribute panels across multiple surfaces rather than concentrating them on one wall.

Can acoustic panels be installed on a gypsum ceiling?

Yes, provided the fixings reach the ceiling framing or use rated hollow anchors and the total load is coordinated with the ceiling supplier. For suspended clouds and baffles, fix to the slab above rather than to the ceiling grid.

Do I need an air gap behind acoustic panels?

It is not mandatory, but a 25–50 mm gap noticeably improves low- and mid-frequency absorption. If bass control matters — studios, cinemas, gyms — always include the gap and fill it with mineral wool.
